Animal Assisted Therapy
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a goal-directed intervention in which an animal, that meets specific criteria, is an integral part of the treatment process of an individual with a disability. AAT can be directed and/or delivered by a recreation therapist (or other health/human sevice professionals) with specialized expertise and within the scope of practice of his/her profession.
AAT is designed to promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning. It can be provided in a variety of setting (hospitals, schools, nursing or assisted licing centers, rehabilitation programs, recreation facilities) and may be group or individual in nature. The process of delivery should be documented and evaluated.
